We were not parted By that final breath, When what we were as one so grimly cleft in two. Our joyous explorations Of wood and field and sea Are ended now for you, But not for me. My single salutations Of track and beach and tree Are simply homage now to all our memories, But in those sole steps taken A message oft appeared The day you left When piercingly bereft A grasshopper Came near Alighted and Would not be moved Steadfast it stayed Would not be shaken Until I’d proved That I was not mistaken. Grasshoppers can only leap one way, Forwards. Move forwards she said And as you tread boldly through Our space, My face may be forever gone, But I am always with you as you and I move on.
